INTRODUCTION
Established in 1994, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at Huafan University seeks to provide excellence in education, helping students fulfill their individual potential intellectually, academically, socially, and culturally. The mission of the Department is to provide undergraduate and graduate students with high fluency in foreign languages (particularly English), and with a humanistic understanding of the global community.
PROGRAMS
The Department offers both undergraduate and graduate programs.
Four-Year Undergraduate Program: Our undergraduate program aims to:
1. Enhance students’ proficiency through the teaching of language, culture, and literature: Our courses have various foci. The language courses provide students with professional training and skills development in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. The literature courses are designed to broaden students’ knowledge and appreciation of English, American, and European literature. Apart from the language and literature courses, we also offer courses that promote cross-cultural awareness and communication. These courses equip students with essential knowledge and skills needed to survive in this age of the global community.
2. Assist students to learn a second foreign language: In the quest to develop students’ multilingual competencies, the Department requires students to take a two-year course in a foreign language other than English (e.g., French, Japanese, or Spanish). Upon completing this requirement, students will be able to become multilingual, effectively communicating with people from diverse language and cultural backgrounds.
3. Provide quality teaching through small classes: Many of our language courses are taught in small classes, with the aim of promoting students’ overall learning outcomes. These courses include English Composition, English Oral Training, and related skills.
4. Facilitate students’ career development: To help students define and discover their career paths, we offer courses and services that provide guidance, support, and resources about job trends and occupations. These include courses on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) (e.g., Chinese-English Translation, Technology English, Tourist English, Effective Writing and Conversation at Work, Applied Linguistics and English Teaching, and other courses). The Department also offers opportunities for internship arrangements with cooperating organizations.
Master of Arts (M.A.)Program
The Master of Arts (M.A.) program in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature leads to a post-baccalaureate degree designed for individuals who are interested in multimedia language teaching, Western cultures, and literature. The program’s curriculum is based on the synergy of theory and practice and is developed to help students become outstanding scholars and professionals in the fields of literature and language.
To meet students’ academic and career needs, our courses cover both literature and language studies. In literature studies courses, we stress English writing skills, analysis of literary works, and the study of literary criticism. In language studies, the courses are concerned primarily with the practice and theory of English teaching via state-of-the-art technology and multimedia. In addition, we also offer a variety of courses, such as ESP, TESOL, Chinese-English Translation, Curriculum Design, etc. The academic education and training provided by the M.A. program will enable students to possess expertise needed for success in students’ academic studies and careers.
CLASSROOM AND INSTRUCTIONAL FACILITIES
A. Multimedia Language Laboratories and Classrooms
The Department maintains three language labs that are designed for teaching effectiveness. The equipment and technology in these labs include multi-media audio and video players as well as Internet access. Our classrooms provide similar equipment to help teachers use technology in their classes.
B. English Corner
B. English Corner
The Department reserves a special area called the “English Corner” for students to practice their oral English skills. The English Corner is a place where students can immerse themselves in English and comfortably share and express ideas with peers and the faculty. Various English-related activities and games are also held here to promote students’ English learning.
CAMPUS ACTITIVIES IN ENGLISH
For the enhancement of students’ English language skills, the Department holds a series of regular activities on campus, including contests in English composition, speech, drama, etc. Our annual dramatic performance, presented by our senior students, draws favorable attention from our entire campus.
TEACHER-STUDENT RELATIONSHIPS
Our faculty members are committed to teaching and research. As students’ academic advisors, they care about their students and are willing to help students in need. With their teachers’ support and encouragement, our students maintain positive relationships with our faculty members.
